Hi all - is there anything happening in this little nook directly behind the Central Station? I know that in the far future the Central Station WILL be redeveloped, and this area might benefit, no? I'm from out of town, but will be around soon. Old Garages make great bars/burger joints... Thanks
prince, it sits right behind 555 gallery, and Detroit Farm and Garden and on a main st connecting SW to Corktown. Build it and they will come! I'd like to see something happen here as it was the best shop around for many years. When it first became abandoned I found it full of junk (some worthy to an admirer of such). A couple years ago i rode into the building on my bike with a couple friends on a hot day and stunned several guys who were cleaning it out and they were going to open up a shop; but it never happened. It would be nice to see it become something other that a cool off from the shade during my commute.
I grew up in and love SW Detroit and was considering bidding on this place but have decided not to after taking a contractor to examine the place. This picture is quite deceiving . The doors are gone and the cinder block walls have gaping holes in them. There are hundreds of tires, strewn about piles of rotted wood, trash and human feces smeared on the floors and walls. When we went into the building there were 2 different groups of scrappers busting out the walls and ceiling. A couple homeless men wandering around using the place as a toilet. My initial question to the contractor was how much would it cost to secure the place from further vandalism? Answer: About 50k---and this is a close friend of mine, there was no exaggeration. The roof needs work, possibly replacement and the structure and walls themselves need to be rebuilt.....there are certainly more issues, but that was enough of a cue for me too move on to the next. It would cost a fortune to rehab this space. It could be a good location one day but you have to be prepared to sink a small fortune into making it work. If anyone is seriously interested I took a few pictures, I just have to get them off of my phone. Good luck.
I was speaking to someone yesterday about it, so looked it over today. A bunch of tires, but looks solid (and ugly) I dig the old place next door. Precast concrete roof is a plus. As for the $50k estimate for close-up: sounds high to me. However, this is not a bootstrap project, but definitely worth a thorough look, and a pretty damn good location right next to the new construction and 555. Well, PDG as locations around challenged Detroit communities go...
Thanks all for the responses... Much appreciated. michael, if you don't mind, some pics would be great. can you post a couple here? Thanks.
I see this property was withdrawn today, I guess the owners still got something plan for it. I hope.
Yes, this is part of a multi-property deal through signature associates. Much of Vernor is being packaged to someone. Exciting times to be in Detroit...
